I think Aurelia was ultimately hoping to encourage her daughter by attempting to infuse some strength into her. This passage is showing how Aurelia believed there was a spiritual battle going on when Marina was born. Aurelia was trying to assure both Marina and herself that she had done everything she could have in attempts to shield her from the evil one.
I go by my middle name Mitchell which is my grandfathers last name. My first name is Bryan and I can think of only one or two close friends that have occasionally called me by this name, unless telemarketers count. My parents called me Bryan for the first couple years of my life. Then when I was about 3 years old my mother's father died of lung cancer, and he never had a son. So in honor of him my parents decided to switch from calling me Bryan to Mitchell. I am sure this was pretty confusing for me during this transitional period, even though I have no recollection of my name being changed.
I have always been glad that I was called Mitchell instead of Bryan. I like the fact that Mitchell is much more unique than Bryan is. I have always felt honored to carry on my grandfathers name, since I have always heard such great things about the man he was. I have liked the name so much that I have even thought about passing the name on to my son some day.
