Names by Emily Haskell

In the passage Aurelia says that she wards off death by calling Marina ugly names. More than likely, knowing her child would be born a girl, Marina was probably the name Aurelia had called her through the pregnancy including the two times she almost miscarried. Because of death's familiarity with that name she holds off calling her daugher by that name for fear that death would hear it and come for her a final time. Marina's name refers to the sea and Aurelia hopes tht such a name might protect her.
My name--Emily Irene-- derives from Latin and Greek. Emily comes from the Latin "Amaelius," which means "industrious." Irene derives from the name of the Greek goddess of peace Eirene, meaning literally "peace." My last name derives from Welsh and Irish, meaning "a great hall" and "from the moors." My first name comes from my mother whose middle name is Emily and from my materal great-grandmother Sarah Emily. My middle name comes from my paternal grandmother. My last name was actually a German name but my paternal grandfather changed it to sound more English.
I like my name, especially my middle name, though when I was little I went through a period of wishing to change it. One of my alternate names is Emilia el Mirasol. I don't have a secret name.
